QTMP: Ground Level Leadership
Some projects go well. This one went better than expected and there are clear reasons why.
The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) is a Queensland’s significant infrastructure investment: a purpose-built manufacturing facility in Torbanlea, Fraser Coast, and is to produce 65 six-car passenger trains for Queensland’s rail network. SWCP was proud to be part of delivering it alongside head contractor John Holland.
Site Leadership
Our Site Foreman, Joel Creevey, understood his trade. He got the sequencing right from day one, took opportunities as they arose, and kept ahead of schedule throughout. That kind of ground-level leadership doesn’t get talked about enough it’s the difference between a project that works and one that doesn’t.
Control Across a Complex Site
The project spanned multiple buildings across a large site footprint from the main manufacturing hall to amenities, offices, and the maintenance building. With that comes real risk coordination gaps, productivity black spots, visibility problems. SWCP used Digital Production Control to keep focus where it mattered most, and it paid off.
Innovation is part of our DNA, and this one was no different, even though they were small. One such as our methodology for installing a Heavy Machine rated mezzanine floor in the Maintenance Building. A genuine installation challenge solved properly.
Workforce Welfare
Live-away projects live or die on the camp. This one was exceptional great food, well-run facilities, and a 10-days-on / 4-days-off swing roster that gave the workforce a rhythm worth committing to.
Because SWCP ran efficiently, a two-shift system wasn’t required. That freed up the site for other trades during off-hours, a win for the whole John Holland program, not just ours.
The covered walkways across the site meant rain didn’t stop play. In Queensland, in a large outdoor construction environment, that’s not a minor detail.
The Outcome
Strong site leadership. Tight control across a complex footprint. A motivated and well-supported workforce. Smart innovation where it counted. Underpinned by excellent project management throughout.
SWCP consider QTMP a great success and a project the team can be genuinely proud of.
